Public Speaking

Public Speaking is an art. The art of public speaking is more than just talking in front of a crowd. You are doing more than just reading a written speech. You are conveying the message of the speech to a group of people in a way that is engaging and effective. A good public speaker captures the attention of her audience and holds it for the duration of their speech. There are multiple factors which go into giving a great speech. The first is the vocal aptitude of the speaker.
When you are speaking in a public setting, you need to speak clearly so that your audience is able to understand you. If you have a strong regional or cultural inflection to your voice it may be hard for some listeners to understand your every word. There are courses and classes designed especially for training the voice and removing noticeable accents. Actors do this all the time when they change their natural speaking voice for a movie role. Proper enunciation and pronouncation are crucial to an effective speech.
The volume and and also the timbre of your voice are important factors. Of course, you will most always have the added benefit of an audio system. Regardless, it's still good to be able to project your voice well in case you ever had to give a speech without modern technology to amplify your voice. Another part of a good speech is the pacing. You don't want to talk too fast or too slow. Rather, aim for a steady pace that allows for changes in the monologue. There may be some points where you talk slower, faster or even pause for effect. Even though there are techniques to use when giving a speech, you should aim to sound natural and not like you are an actor on a stage.
You will find that the art of public speaking is covered extensively by the books, audio programs, classes and workshops out there. You can find plenty of resources to help you learn how to deliver fantastic speeches and cure any public speaking jitters. Some people prefer to learn on their own while others like a classroom setting. Learning to be a great speaker is not without difficulty for some people. With time and practice, even the most anxiety-prone can become confident and effective public speakers.
